By any chance have you watched the adult animated FX series “Archer”? On the surface, it is spy spoof/office comedy about a self-centered, alcoholic spy named Sterling Archer (voiced by H Jon Benjamin). I thought you would be interested because you are a fan of “Arrested Development” (as am I), and “Archer” has a few of the same elements like an ensemble cast of hilariously unlikable characters, and plenty of callbacks/continuity. Also, “Archer” features Jessica Walter (Lucille Bluth) and Judy Greer (Kitty Sanchez) in the main cast playing characters similar to their characters from “Arrested Development”. Jeffrey Tambor and David Cross have been on “Archer” a few times as well.
Also, a few blogs have called “Archer” surprisingly feminist. The feminist movie/TV review blog Bitch Flicks (which I recommend) has praised the show for having an African American woman, Lana Kane (voiced by Aisha Tyler), as the female lead and voice of reason.
The blog Girls Like Giants has an article titled “Is Archer the Most Progressive Television Show on Women’s Sexuality?” It praises how the older female character Malory Archer (voiced by Jessica Walter) is still realistically attractive. It also mentions how the overweight, hedonistic, bisexual Pam Poovey (voiced by Amber Nash) is very open about who she is and is realistically chubby. Even Cheryl (voiced by Judy Greer) is celebrated about being open regarding her masochistic tendencies.
And while nobody else has mentioned this, “Archer” also has Ray Gillette (voiced by series creator Adam Reed), an openly, effeminate gay man, who is very capable at what he does, often the voice of reason, and really badass!
Long story short, I recommend both “Archer”, and the two articles I have just previously mentioned.
Yes, I have watched the FX show Archer! I enjoyed the first couple seasons immensely. It’s hilarious, clever, and irreverent, much like Arrested Development (though I’d argue it’s kicked up a notch 🙂
Thank you for the recommendations on the articles taking a feminist viewpoint of Archer, I’ll definitely check them out!
Have you ever considered writing a television review on “Parks and Recreation”? Gender-wise, there would be plenty to talk about!
Parks and Recreation is one of my favorite shows! You’re right – it’s got a lot of great content in terms of adding to the discussion on gender roles. It even satirizes gender expectations while critiquing them. I actually may end up doing a review of it. Thanks for the recommendation!
Have you seen the movie “Edge of Tomorrow”? If you have, do you plan on writing a review for it? If you haven’t seen it, I definitely recommend it!
It’s been recommended to me by a couple of people, but I haven’t had time to go see it this summer. I love sci-fi, and especially interesting women in sci-fi, so it looks right up my alley. Definitely planning on seeing it!
On this blog and in your videos, you often criticize Disney Channel shows (and for very good reason). I remember in one of your older videos (I don’t remember which one, but it probably came out in 2010), you mentioned the only Disney Channel show you enjoyed was “Phineas and Ferb” (which I agree with). Now that “Gravity Falls” has been on the Disney Channel since 2012, what are your thoughts on it? Also, did you know the second season is coming out on August 1st?
